Reasons to be cheerful: 1,2,3…
I’ve been a bit tardy in posting January’s UK cinema admissions total, but publication of February’s figures, courtesy of the Cinema Advertising Association, has spurred me into action. Better late than never…especially when the numbers make such welcome reading.
The year began strongly with admissions totalling 14,504,588 in January, the highest total for that month since 2004, and a rise of 7.7% on the same month in 2008. Top performing titles included Slumdog Millionaire (which took £13.6 million during the month), Role Models and Yes Man.
And despite miserable weather conditions across much of the country, February outshone its predecessor with admissions totalling 14,967,291 (the highest figure for the month since 2003). Slumdog added £11.85 million to its total during February, but the top performing title was Disney’s Bolt, with a box office gross of £15 million (thanks to the half-term break).
Taken together, these two months represent the best start to the year since 2003 (when Lord of the Rings The Return of the King was still playing in its Oscar-winning year), and admissions are up an impressive 12% on the first two months of 2008.
