Here are two more box office updates for the first six months of the year, this time for Japan and Poland.
Writing in ScreenDaily.com, Jason Gray reports data published by Bunka Tsushin that shows Japanese box office gross for the first six months of 2009 totaled $990.9 million, up 18% over the same period in 2008. This total covers the grosses of the top 13 distributors in the territory, who share 95% of the market.
The news from Poland reveals equally buoyant performance. Dorota Hartwich, writing in Cineuropa.org, reports data from boxoffice.pl showing that Poland saw strong growth in admissions during the first six months of 2009. Ticket sales totaled 20 million between January and June 2009, a rise of 16% over the same period in 2008. This beats the previous record first-half admissions seen in 2004, when 19 million tickets were sold.
Box office revenues are also up according to boxoffice.pl, hitting $113 million by the end of June 2009, a rise of nearly one quarter (23%) on last year’s first-half total.
