This year’s cinema admissions are shaping up to be the strongest we’ve seen for a generation according to the latest figures issued by the Cinema Advertising Association.
July saw 20,039,500 ticket sales, which puts the total for the first seven months of 2009 (103,498,966) up nearly 10% on the same period in 2008.
In fact ticket sales between the beginning of January and the end of July 2009 are higher than the same period in 2002, when the total stood at 102,696,536 (see Figure 1).
2002 is a significant comparator because it closed with the highest annual admissions since 1971 (on the back of strong performances from the likes of Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Monsters, Inc., Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones and Die Another Day).
I don’t yet have a list of the top performing titles in July, but it should appear on Pearl and Dean’s web site any day now.
